Death by Treats
Go back to Why University of Yuppy Puppy?

What you need to know before you say yes to train your dog with treats.

Why train without the use of treats? We know the training process takes a little longer; we also know that the use of treats breaks down the importance of our position in the pack. No treat training builds a powerful bond between owner and dog without the issue of bribery. We also know from many years of experience you eliminate the 'flighty' behavior dogs exude if they know you're trying to lure them to come to you.

Let's ask a few questions:

If you treat train your dog with cheese from the age of a puppy, and the dog is now 4 years of age, are you sure your dog will come to you if you don't have cheese on yourself?

The temperature is 94 degrees in the blazing sun. Are you going to carry cheese treats around in your pocket? Is that practical?

Baiting or bribing. Is this the sign of a trained dog if you can't control your dog without treats?

What happens if you run out of treats while on a walk?

What happens when the dog is full and doesn't want a treat? Where is your assurance your dog will listen and respond?

Did you know when you condition a dog to treat training, the dog will have a higher behavior problem in begging for food and cruising counter tops?

Why increase the risk of your dog jumping up or on small children who have gooey hands or a messy face? Can you afford to be sued when the dog bites their cheek? Do you want to be ordered to put your dog to death by the courts?

Now that the dog is conditioned to treat training, is there a course to train your dog off of the use of treats?

Did you know the #1 asked question in Australia about treat training is how do I get my dog to listen without the use of treats?

Did you know that Canada has the highest obesity rate in dogs?

Solutions to treat trained Adult dogs

Stop immediately from using the treats and throw all of the treats away. You will need to resort back to some preliminary training practices to re-establish yourself as Alpha.

Most dogs take approximately 4 months of work in establishing your position and educating the dog that it is not equal or greater then you at any given time. Off lead will be minimized and in some cases void during any walk outside. Non-verbal praise with verbal praise being implemented slowly and monitoring the amount of verbal communication will need to be trimmed back in order to secure a position of Alpha in a positive non-confusing way.

Tell your trainer you would like a full refund and for them to reimburse you for all additional training to re-educate your dog so it is not expecting a treat.

Don't be surprised if you will get the cold shoulder or treated like you have made the mistake. I have heard some pretty crazy excuses from many treat-based trainers.

Good Luck!
